Information about the service |
Haematology disorders are treated from a large purpose built unit at Russells Hall Hospital – Th
The unit has its own phlebotomist and dedicated blood counter so that patients can be seen with a current blood count. The patients seen in general clinics include those with bleeding or clotting problems, abnormalities in blood counts and haematological cancers. The haematology team operates an urgent direct access Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) service where patients suspected of having DVT can be referred directly by their GPs. If required, patients are referred to the DVT service and will subsequently be reviewed at a follow up clinic by a consultant haematologist who will assess whether any further investigation is necessary. The haematology team has received approval from the Specialised Services Authority for Level III Haematological Services, which allows us to provide stem cell collection and autologus stem cell transplantation (using patients’ own stem cells).
