Information about the service

With a complement of 13 consultants, nine of whom are full time with fellowship-level training in their areas of specialist interest, the trauma and orthopaedic service at Russells Hall Hospital offers a comprehensive service.

The Clinical Director, Mr Mushtaq Ahmed is supported in his team by Alistair Marsh, Medical Service H Image of nurse attending a patientead, Jenny Bree, Matron and Jennie Muraszewski, General Manager.

Service elements include:

  • Monday to Friday daily fracture clinics in support of emergency department patients

  • Full range of orthopaedic services including hip and knee joint replacement using state of the art ‘computer navigation’, shoulder and upper limb, foot and ankle, sports injuries and advanced arthroscopic surgery, spinal surgery and paediatric orthopaedics

  • Daily consultant-led and delivered trauma operating lists in a dedicated trauma theatre

  • A dedicated fracture neck of femur unit of 24 beds on the trauma ward

  • A consultant nurse – the first one to be appointed in the Trust

  • A multi-disciplinary ‘hospital at home’ service which helps the discharge of patients back into the community

  • Nurse-led education classes that personalise and educate patients about to undergo a hip or knee replacement

  • Close working with both community-based and hospital-based physiotherapy to develop patient pathways

  • Specialist limb reconstruction techniques for trauma patients including circular frames (Ilizarov and spatial frames), advanced plate fixation and local/free flap soft tissue procedures (with plastic surgeons

  • State of the art laminar flow ventilation in three trauma and orthopaedic theatres Ring fenced elective ward with 0% MRSA rates

  • Combined clinics with rheumatologists and lists with plastic surgeons

  • Orthogeriatric consultant to help stabilise elderly patients both pre and post operatively

  • Fast track service with direct theatre booking via Extended Scope Practitioners (ESP) for caudal epidural and Manipulation under Anaesthetic (MUA) for frozen shoulder
