We are looking for confident, friendly people with good communication skills who feel that they may be able to assist patients and visitors coming into hospital.

Volunteers are an integral part of the Trust, providing help for patients in a variety of roles:

Volunteer Mealtime Assistant

Breakfast: 7.30am - 10am

Lunch: 11am - 2pm

Dinner: 4pm - 7pm

You may be required to help with menu selection, hand cleansing, replenishing drinking water, encouragement to eat, feeding patients and making drinks. It is anticipated that a Volunteer Mealtime Assistant will be trained and able to undertake all of the above tasks.

Patient Survey Volunteers

Weekdays only - time to suit avoiding mealtimes.

Chat to patients using set questionnaires to solicit their views for service improvement. This is an ideal opportunity for volunteers who want to support patients who may be in need of company whilst at the same time making a difference to the services provided by the hospital.

Clerical Volunteer Support

Weekdays between 8am - 5pm only.

Tasks include answering telephones, receiving visitors to ward/dept, putting patient information packs together, encouraging use of hand gel and basic administration and clerical duties. There are no tasks using computers.

Patient Friends

Befriending patients within the hospital. You may be able to support patients who may not have visitors or patients having to attend appointments alone and in need of a friendly face. If you can speak languages other than English, why not offer your support to patients who do not have English as their first language?

General Ward Volunteers

Working alongside nursing staff, chatting to patients, running errands, helping with basic tasks, reading to patients, demonstrating radio/TV links, making drinks, mealtime assistance and collecting requests/dedications to be played on Dudley Hospital Radio.

Outpatient Host Volunteers

Monday - Friday 9am - 12noon or 1.30 - 4.30pm.

Tasks include directing patients to waiting areas, carrying notes to clinic rooms, escorting patients to other areas in the hospital and running errands.

Emergency Department/EAU Volunteers

Tasks include sitting with patients in need of a friendly face, running errands, making drinks and escorting patients/relatives to other areas of the hospital.

X-ray Department Volunteers

Monday - Friday 9am - 12noon

Working alongside portering staff. Tasks include telephoning wards to check patient details, directing patients to waiting areas and sitting with patients within X-ray.

Main Reception and Enquiry Desk Volunteers

Helping with general enquiries, trying to ensure stock of wheelchairs in reception, wayfinding for patients/visitors, pushing patients in wheelchairs to appointments and escorting patients/relatives throughout the hospital.

Action Heart Volunteers

Please contact Action Heart direct on (01384) 292233.

Dudley Hospital Radio

Please contact Dudley Hospital Radio direct on (01384) 234222.

Please note that there are currently no opportunties in Maternity, Pharmacy or laboratory areas.

The minimum age for volunteering is 16-years-old (18-years-old for the Emergency Department and Children's Ward) and vacancies exist at all of the Trust's three hospital sites at Russells Hall, Corbett and Guest.
You should be able to commit to at least six months volunteering with regular weekly shifts of three to four hours (minimum 100 hours). You will be required to attend an interview and suitable individuals will need to provide two references, basic health clearance and police check (CRB). Full training will then be provided.
Please note that volunteering is not the same as work experience and there are no specific opportunities for observation of clinical procedures or facilities to shadow qualified members of staff.

If you are interested in volunteering, you will need to complete an application form which can be obtained by writing to, telephoning or emailing:
